The mission of the Wake County Public School System English as a Second Language (ESL) Program is to teach the English language to Limited English Proficient (LEP) students so they can gain access to the NC Standard Course of Study, graduate from high school, and participate fully in American society.

ESL in Wake County has undergone some changes this year as we opened our new Center for International Enrollment (CIE).  The purpose of the CIE is to provide families critical information regarding schools, administer the initial English language proficiency test, ensure that children are placed in classes appropriately as soon as they enter school and allow our ESL teachers to focus on teaching and learning.

If you and your child communicate with each other in a language other than English and you are moving from a school outside of Wake County, you will need to register your child for school at the new CIE located at 3600 Wake Forest Road in Raleigh.  At the CIE, our staff will help you complete school paperwork and will provide information on the Wake County School System.  In addition, your child may be tested to determine whether or not they are limited English proficient and qualify for ESL services.  Please be aware that this process does not apply to students who will be kindergarteners during the 2010-11 school year. 

La misión del English as a Second Language Program (ESL) del Sistema de escuelas públicas del Condado Wake es enseñar el idioma inglés a alumnos con dominio limitado el idioma inglés (LEP, por sus siglas en inglés) para que puedan obtener acceso a los cursos de estudios estandarizados de NC, graduarse con un diploma y participar plenamente en la sociedad estadounidense.

ESL en el Condado Wake ha sufrido algunos cambios este año ya que abrimos nuestro nuevo Centro de Matrícula Internacional (CIE, por sus siglas en inglés).  El propósito del CIE es proporcionar a las familias información crítica acerca de las escuelas, aplicar el examen inicial de dominio del idioma inglés, garantizar que los niños sean colocados en clases de forma adecuada tan pronto como entren a la escuela y permitir que nuestros maestros de ESL se enfoquen en la enseñanza y el aprendizaje.

Si usted y su hijo(a) se comunican entre sí en un idioma diferente al inglés y se está cambiando de escuela de afuera del Condado Wake, usted deberá registrar a su hijo para la escuela en el nuevo CIE ubicado en 3600 Wake Forest Road en Raleigh.  En el CIE, nuestro personal le ayudará a llenar la documentación escolar y le proporcionará información sobre el Sistema de escuelas públicas del condado Wake.  Además, se le puede aplicar un examen a su hijo(a) para determinar si tiene un dominio limitado del inglés y califica para los servicios de ESL.  Tome en cuenta que este proceso no aplica a alumnos que vayan a estar en kindergarten durante el año escolar 2010-11.
