The Wake County Public School System is made up of more than a hundred schools, some 13,000 teachers and staff, and thousands of volunteers working together to educate our children. They tackle their problems and challenges with enthusiasm, determination, heart and creativity. These are some of their stories.

Students Make Interactive Video Reading Curriculum
December 16, 2008 - The Bobcat students at Fuquay-Varina Middle School are in the process of making an interactive video reading curriculum. Sixth-graders Maura Coolbaugh and Andrew Sowers filmed and produced the first in a series of many videos designed to teach fellow students reading strategies and comprehension skills.

December 16, 2008 - The Triangle Leadership Academy has been recognized by Leadership Triangle with a Goodman Award for Exemplary Regional Leadership by an Organization.
Lufkin Goes Mutt Strutt
November 1, 2008 - November 1st was a picture-perfect day for Mutt Strutt. This annual dog walk festival and fundraiser for the Wake County Animal Care, Control and Adoption Center took place, as usual, in Raleigh’s Historic Oak View Park.

Enloe High Students Win National Team America Rocketry Challenge
May 23, 2008 - A team of ten students from Enloe High School is headed to England after winning the national Sixth Annual Team America Rocketry Challenge held outside of Washington, D.C. earlier this month.
WCPSS Drivers Earn State Roadeo Honors
May 16, 2008 - Three Wake County Public School System bus drivers placed in the top ten at the state's 2008 School Bus Driving Competition on May 15.
Wake Early College Students Learn About CPR
May 16, 2008 - Students of Wake Early College of Health and Sciences took part in a CPR training session this week where they learned about the different varieties of CPR through practice and DVD.
Leesville Road High Chorus Named Area’s Top Youth Chorus
May 1, 2008 - Capital Pride, the honors vocal ensemble of Leesville Road High celebrated today as they were named the winner of the Triangle Youth Chorus Trophy for 2008. The group, directed by Diane Covington, is an auditioned choir of 42 juniors and seniors.
66 Students Selected to Attend Governor’s School 2008
March 27, 1008 - Sixty-six students from 15 Wake County Public School System high schools have been selected to attend the Governor’s School of North Carolina for 2008.
Mt. Everest Connection Takes Learning at Martin Middle School to New Heights
March 10, 2008 - Students at Martin Middle School today began a two-month journey to the top of Mt. Everest. Mobile wireless Internet connectivity facilitated by the school, MCNC, Arch Rock Corporation and Cisco will enable students to interact with mountain-climber and local Cisco engineer Ciprian “Chip” Popoviciu as he attempts to summit the world’s highest peak this spring.

December 20, 2007 - Work is underway on an amphitheater that’s being built at Swift Creek Elementary thanks to help the school is receiving from a local business.

March 13, 2007 - The team of students from Daniels Middle School emerged winners among the 18 WCPSS middle schools that competed in the Wake County Public School System Battle of the Books March 10 at Garner High School.
Embracing and Celebrating Diversity
March 2007 - Wilburn Year-Round Elementary held its second International Festival on Oct. 27 to embrace and celebrate the diversity at the school. I implemented the initiative because building a strong relationship between the school, students and parents is essential for school success.
Pianist Joel A. Martin and Enloe Students Premiere Music
January 19, 2007 - In collaboration with Enloe High School, internationally acclaimed pianist and composer Joel A. Martin will premiere five commissioned works in a program entitled Jazzical®: Enloe on at 3 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 11, at Meymandi Concert Hall. Martin, a Raleigh native, will be accompanied by members of the Enloe Concert Wind Ensemble, String Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble, and Chorus.

January 17, 2007 - A total of 72 WCPSS high-school students were recently selected to participate in the 2007 North Carolina Eastern Regional All-State Orchestra.
Students Earn Honors at Regional Arts Competition
January 17, 2007 - WCPSS students earned recognition in the 29th annual Eastern/Central NC Region Scholastic Art Awards sponsored by the Wilson Daily Times and Barton College. The competitions Gold Key Award winners will be recognized with a reception Jan. 21 at Barton College where their work was displayed.
East Millbrook Hosts Winter Festival
January 17, 2007 - Each year, as part of the International Baccalaureate program, the school community at East Millbrook Magnet Middle School embarks on the exploration of one essential question.
Reading Comes Alive
January 2007 - If there is a challenge in the world of school librarianship, it is getting students to be engaged in purposeful reading, especially reading that directly supports classroom instruction and the diverse curricula of a school. One of the ways the library at Broughton High School accomplished that this year was by a visit from Tim Tyson, author of the book Blood Done Sign My Name. Blood is the historical account of a racially-motivated murder in Oxford, N.C. in 1970, and the fallout that ensued from this egregious crime. Students at Broughton, via English and U.S. History classes, read Blood and then were treated to Tyson’s visit where he discussed the book’s background, his remembrances from the time period (he was living in Oxford at the time), and how racial divides have continued to open and close throughout the history of not only our state but our country as well.

Awards
December 1, 2006 - Wake County Public School System educators earned top
honors at the annual meeting of the North Carolina Alliance for Athletics,
Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance held in Greensboro. The
WCPSS teachers earning recognition included Joanna Caves of Martin Middle
School, Rebecca Clark of Enloe High School, Fernando Ortega of Lufkin Road
Middle School and Betsy Beals of Northwoods Elementary School.

Earns Blue Ribbon
November 22, 2006 - Davis Drive Elementary was one of five North Carolina
public schools recently honored as 2006 No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon
Schools by US Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings.
Branch Awarded Friday Medal
November 21, 2006 - Ken Branch was presented the inaugural Friday Medal
by University of North Carolina System President Emeritus William C. "Bill"
Friday on Nov. 15 at the William and Ida Friday Institute on Centennial
Campus.
East Garner Students Rally Against
School Violence
October 17, 2006 - The recent rash of shootings in schools was the focus
of a Peace Rally held by students of East Garner Middle School Monday.
Panther Creek High School
Holds Dedication Ceremony
October 16, 2006-- The Wake County Public School System, the Town of Cary
and Wake County held a dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony for the new
Panther Creek High School Monday, October 16. After the ribbon cutting,
the student body president, and presidents of the class of 2010 and 2009
guided guests around campus and answered questions about their new school.
Brentwood Elementary
Named Wake County's First Watershed Stewardship School
October 6, 2006-- Brentwood Elementary School in Raleigh was presented Wake
County's first "Watershed Stewardship School Award" during its
Clean Water Celebration this morning. Wake Soil and Water Conservation District
and the City of Raleigh Stormwater Management Division selected Brentwood
for the steps the school has taken in learning about nearby Marsh Creek
and leading community partners in projects to protect it.
WCPSS School-to-Career Celebrates
12 Sucessful Years
September 2006 - More than 200 business leaders, elected officials and school
personnel met on Sept. 26 to celebrate 12 successful years of Wake County's
unique business and education collaborative partnership known as the School-to-Career
Initiative.
Board of Education Recognizes
Millbrook Teacher
September 2006 - At its September 19 meeting, the Board of Education recognized
Millbrook High teacher Lindy Poling as North Carolina History Teacher of
the Year for 2006. Poling will receive a $1,000 honorarium and will be in
the running for the National History Teacher of the Year award to be selected
this fall.
Enloe Offers Seminar To
Prepare Freshmen For New Graduation Project
August 2, 2006 - More than 180 freshmen have started their high school career
at Enloe High School taking part in a new course designed to help them prepare
for the state's new high school graduation standards.
Combs Recognized as 2006
Partner in 4-H Winner
July 2006 - Combs Leadership Magnet Elementary School has been recognized
as a 2006 Partner in 4-H winner. Several school representatives were recognized
at a luncheon during State 4-H Congress held recently at N.C. State University
and other Raleigh locations.
Brentwood Elementary in Running
for $100,000 Clean Water Trust Fund Grant
May 5, 2006 – Brentwood Elementary School in Raleigh is in the running
for a $100,000 Clean Water Trust Fund grant, established to clean up North
Carolina waters. Brentwood Elementary, which lies in the Falls Lake watershed,
submitted an action plan on how it will manage storm water coming off the
school, filtering it before the water reaches nearby Marsh Creek.

County PTA Council
May 5, 2006 - Three Wake County teachers were honored by the Wake County
PTA Council as the 50,000 member organization installed new officers and
recognized school employees, volunteers and programs during its annual awards
program at Sanderson High School last night.

April 7, 2006 - Middle Creek High senior Channing Shor was one of the key
leaders at the 10th Annual Summit for the National Association of Students
Against Violence Everywhere, or SAVE held in Raleigh April 1.
Carnage Carries Regional
History Competition
March 24, 2006 - Sixty-three Carnage Middle School students traveled to
Elon University on March 17 to compete in the regional contest for National
History Day. Of these 63 students, 44 advanced to the state competition
that will be held on Saturday, April 29 at the Museum of History.
Enloe Conducts First NC High
School International Video Conference
March 23, 2006 - In a first for North Carolina high schools, Enloe High
students launched a virtual partnership with students at Eyuboglu High School
in Istanbul, Turkey in a class held by international video conference March
15.

March 14, 2006 - Wake County Public School System high schools won six state
championships (boys basketball, wrestling individual team, boys swimming,
gymnastics, indoor track, cheerleading) and finished as the runner-up in
three other state championships (girls basketball, wrestling team, gymnastics).
WCPSS Students Achieve High Scores on AMC-8
Math Exam
March 10, 2006 - Four of the top seven schools taking part in the AMC8 math
tests this school year were from the Wake County Public Schools System.
Ligon Middle was tops for the third year in a row with a team score of 113
and 73 students score a 15 or better on the 25 point exam.

January 26, 2006 - Eighth grade students at Ligon Middle School will be
working with a state agency on a Save Our History preservation grant awarded
by The History Channel Jan. 23.
Sparks and Pettiford elected to American
School Counselor Association Board
December 22, 2005 - In October of 2006, Eric Sparks will take the position
of president elect of ASCA. Sparks is a former high school counselor and
now WCPSS Director of School Counseling, where he works with approximately
275 school counselors.

"Off to a Good Start" in Kindergarten
December 16, 2005 - Project Enlightenment, part of the Wake County Public
School System, is presenting "Off to a Good Start - As Your Child Enters
Kindergarten," a free information session for parents of rising kindergartners.
Sessions are planned for several Wake County locations during January and
February 2006. Project Enlightenment offers these sessions each year prior
to kindergarten registration, which is held each February in Wake County.
Broughton Students Travel
to Guatemala
December 8, 2005 - Fifteen Broughton students, one parent, a former teacher/translator,
and five chaperones traveled to Antigua, Guatemala Nov. 18-26 for the fourth
year of Proyecto Quetzal, an international experience open to all Broughton
students.
Ligon Opens Youth Bank
Nov. 3, 2005 - SunTrust Bank opened a 'Youth Bank' Oct. 26 at Ligon Middle
School, the first bank of its kind in the Triangle. Students will have the
opportunity to operate and manage the bank and can use the bank to open
a deposits only savings account. The program is intended to help students
become familiar with basic business and banking skills that they will be
able to use in school, in their careers and in their everyday lives.
Nine WCPSS Schools take part in
2005 Walk to School
Sept. 30, 2005 - On Wednesday, October 5th, nine Wake County elementary
schools will participate in the 2005 Walk to School project as a part of
a national event involving over 3,000 schools. The purpose of the project
is to bring greater community awareness to our nation's obesity and type
II diabetes epidemic and to encourage families to take a more active role
in the prevention of premature death due to heart attack, stoke, hypertension,
and physical inactivity.

September 13, 2005 - WCPSS has 77 teams from schools or central office departments
that have signed up to take part in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's
2005 RTP Walk to Cure Diabetes.
Poe Elementary's Golden
Year Celebration
September 13, 2005 - Please help us to celebrate Poe Elementary School's
50th anniversary and Poe Montessori Magnet School's 10 th anniversary. The
school is requesting photos, memorabilia and anecdotes that can be included
on a student-created timeline that will highlight events that influenced
the community surrounding Poe, as well as the school itself. All items for

Coach Brings Basketball Camp
to Knightdale
August 11, 2005 - Knightdale Knights Basketball Coach Battle Watkins gave
another "first" to Knightdale in early June. Coach Watkins directed
the Knightdale Basketball Camp for boys and girls age 6-12 years. Camp took
place at the spacious Knightdale Recreation Center attached to Forestville
Road Elementary School. About 55 campers took advantage of the opportunity
to work on offensive skills, drills and defense.

Society NC Teacher of the Year
June 14, 2005 - Donna Kuni of Hodge Road Elementary School was named the
Teacher of the Year by the Autism Society of North Carolina.

May 17, 2005 - Six Wake County Public School System employees were recognized
by the Board of Education with the Employee Excellence Awards at the board's
May 17 meeting.
Wake County PTA Honors 2005 Educators

the Wake County PTA Council as the 48,000-member organization installed
new officers and recognized school employees, volunteers and programs during
its annual awards program Tuesday.
My First Year Teaching at
a Non-Traditional Age
May 10, 2005 - My first year teaching has been an exciting experience that
I am going to treasure the rest of my life. I will treasure this new experience
because I had to work extremely hard to get to this point. While attending
the University of North Carolina at Wilmington (UNCW), I was considered
to be a non-traditional student because I was over the age of 25 and I was
working a full-time job while attending classes as a full-time student.
Being able to use my life experience in my first year of teaching has taught
me several things such as patience, the ability to expand my own learning
as a teacher, and to develop my love for writing.

May 10, 2005 - Nineteen Wake County Public School System teachers were recognized
at the 6th Annual Honor a Teacher program hosted by the Cary Chamber of
Commerce.
Broughton Foundation Receives
$100,000 from Alumnus
May 9, 2005 - The Needham B. Broughton Capital Foundation has been given
a jumpstart, a $100,000 gift from Broughton alumnus Richard H. Jenrette,
retired chairman and CEO of The Equitable Companies, Inc. Jenrette, a 1947
graduate of the Wake County high school, is a long-time benefactor of his
alma mater. In recent years, Jenrette's gifts have helped establish the
Jenrette Teaching Excellence Award and provided enrichment opportunities
for teachers.

Jim Bazluki Named 2005
Athletic Trainer of the Year
April 11, 2005 - Jim Bazluki, Cary High School's head athletic trainer,
has been named the N.C. Athletic Trainers Association's 2005 Secondary School
Athletic Trainer of the Year. The NCATA recognized Bazluki at its annual
meeting and award luncheon in Charlotte, March 12.

April 8, 2005 - Broughton High principal Diane Payne was handed a check
from former Duke University basketball star Jay Williams Thursday thanks
to the efforts of 10th-grader Julie Smith and the school's efforts to keep

April 4, 2005 - Northwoods Elementary PE teacher Betsy Beals will be honored
as the Southern District Elementary School Physical Educator of the Year

April 4, 2005 - Academic competitions give students a chance to dig more
deeply into topics they love. Students have a chance to connect their classroom
efforts to real world activities as they tackle complex problems often with
the help of mentors who are experts in the field. There are many rewards
- from the travel to exciting events where students meet others who share
their interest to scholarships and learning adventures. Ultimately, these
events give children a chance to excel.

March 15, 2005 - Ten Wake County Public School System employees were recognized
by the Board of Education with the Employee Excellence Awards at the board's
March 15 meeting.

March 14, 2005 - More than 400 students representing 26 Wake County Public
School System middle schools met in the 2005 Battle of the Books at Southeast
Raleigh High Saturday. First place finishers included Ligon in eighth grade,
Daniels in seventh grade and Carnage in sixth grade.

· Broughton HS won the NCHSAA 4A State Championship after winning
the Sectionals and Eastern Regional - Coach Dayna Jordan

March 3, 205 - Seventy teams of teachers and administrators from three Wake
County Public School System International Baccalaureate magnet schools will
work together Wednesday, March 16 to review the projects of more than 500
Broughton High 10th graders.
Ligon Reads Project Part of 50th
Anniversary Celebration
March 2, 2005 - Ligon Middle School will continue its 50th anniversary celebration
with LIGON READS - a unique school-wide reading program that will bring
students, staff, alumni, parents and community leaders together to read
and discuss the same book. The LIGON READS selection, Leon's Story,
by Leon Walter Tillage, a Wake County, N.C. native, was chosen for its thematic
connection to Ligon s anniversary celebration.
WCPSS Schools Provide Tsunami
Relief
March 2, 2005 - The world's most powerful earthquake in more than 40 years
struck deep under the Indian Ocean on Dec. 26, triggering massive tsunamis
that obliterated cities, seaside communities and holiday resorts, killing
tens of thousands of people in a dozen countries. A number of WCPSS schools
have worked to assist relief efforts for countries that suffered from the
storm's effects.
Winners Chosen for the Gifts of Gold
Art Exhibit
March 2, 2005 - A panel of judges has selected this year's Gifts of Gold
winners from 96 entries for the annual student art show. Each art teacher
in Wake County is encouraged to submit one piece of student art for this
exceptional show, which serves as the visual arts component of Pieces of
Gold, the annual visual and performing arts extravaganza produced by Wake
Education Partnership and the Wake County Public School System.

Wake County Schools
Feb. 16, 2005 - Elected Officials are going to school in Wake County. During
the week of Feb. 22-25, more than 65 elected officials and other VIPs will
visit Wake County schools to see first hand what happens inside the walls
of education. The school guests will visit classrooms and meet with students
and teachers, as well as take a tour of the facilities. Schools will show
off their strengths and accomplishments while at the same time clearly communicating
the challenges they face on a daily basis.
New Mentoring Program Targets Middle
Schoolers
Feb. 14, 2005 - A new type of mentoring program is being launched
in the Wake County Public School System partnering adults with students
in grades 4-8. MentorNet will recruit, train and support volunteers willing
to make a two-year, weekly commitment to a child.
WCPSS Middle Schools Name Winners in
Geography Bee
Feb. 1, 2005 - Seventeen Wake County middle schools participated in the
Geography Bee this year naming school winners who will go in to compete
at the National Geographic Society's state competition April 1.
Science Olympiad for Raleigh
area to be held at Garner High School
Jan. 14, 2005 - Middle and high school students in Wake, Durham and Johnston
counties will compete in the Science Olympiad Region 4 tournament at Garner
High School beginning at 8 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 5. Teams who win at the
state s 12 regional competitions earn the chance to compete in the state
Science Olympiad April 15-16 at NC State University.

November 4, 2004 - Reading aloud to children has been identified as the
single most important activity for developing skills essential for reading
success. Yet many young children in Wake County enter kindergarten never
having had stories read to them; many have no books in their homes. Project
Enlightenment, part of the Wake County Public School System, has been working
to change this with the "On the Road to Reading" Children's Book
Drive.

October 25, 2004 - Apex Elementary School is the first WCPSS school to be
recognized by the National PTA as a Parent Involvement School of Excellence.
Schools that earn this certification from the PTA must complete a self-examination
that looks at the way the school communicates, provides parenting discussions,
involves parents in student learning and collaborates with the community.
In addition, the school must have a plan for parent involvement in school
decision-making and advocacy.

October 25, 2004 - The words "we are family" took on a whole new
language in Katie Ware Partin's French elective class at Washington GT Magnet
Elementary. To finish up the quarter, her students performed a play in French

Triplets Graduate from Green Hope High
May 30, 2003 - Triplets Sapana, Sachi and Saket Vora are graduating as top
scholars from Green Hope High School Sunday morning. Sapana is the school's
valedictorian with a 5.19 grade point average (GPA). Friend Meghan Eberle
finished second in GPA, then Saket was third and Sachi fourth in a class
of 466 students. Sapana and Sachi each earned Davie Scholarships to the
University of North Carolina. Saket earned a Park Scholarship, a full four-year
scholarship to North Carolina State University.

May 14, 2002 - School bus driver Barbara Bass received
the Tracy Lea Calhoun Memorial Award during the Wake County Public Schools'
annual Bus Drivers Awards Banquet held May 9. Bass, who is a bus driver
for the Garner transportation district, was selected from 13 nominees for
the honor. The 13 school bus drivers nominated for the award were named
Outstanding School Bus Drivers for the 2001-2002 School Year. One driver

May 3, 2002 - Third-grade math teacher Kitty Rutherford
used chocolate chip cookies to earn an invitation to the White House to
meet with Vice President Dick Cheney and an award from the National Science
Foundation. In March, the Dillard Drive Elementary teacher was awarded the
2001 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching,
the nation's highest award for science and mathematics teachers. The Awards
are administered by the National Science Foundation.

High Principal Dave Coley Named to National Advisory Panel on National Board
for Teacher Certification
March 18, 2002 - Cary High Principal Dave Coley is
one of 12 elementary and secondary school principals from across the nation
picked to serve on the newly named advisory board for the National Board
for Professional Teaching Standards. A long time supporter of the National
Board certification process for teachers, Coley worked with the board's
staff a year ago when he briefed congressional staffers in Washington, DC
on the benefits of teacher certification. The board staff named Coley as
one of three at-large principals on the 12-member panel.

Springs Wins the Triple "S" Award Three Years in a Row
February 26, 2002 - Vandora Springs Elementary is
not just a safe school - it's a Super Safe School. For the third year in
a row, Vandora Springs was recognized by the N.C. Department of Public Instruction
for providing a safe learning environment for its students and staff. The
school is one of only three schools across the state to receive the Super
Safe Schools Award all three years of the program's existence and was the
only Triangle school to be selected for the award this year.

February 18, 2002 - Students at East Garner Middle
School are utilizing the power of the Internet and the expertise of IBM
employees to enhance their performance in the classroom. Each week, the
students in Patrick McArdle's seventh-grade enrichment class work one-on-one
with IBM employees, who provide them with academic assistance, advice and
a caring adult to talk to - all over the Internet.

has begun tackling some of the tough issues that teachers say will help
them be more effective in the classroom.

Look for Ways to Reduce Paperwork
February 5,2002 - The lack of time and overwhelming
amount of paperwork that teachers cite as problems are issues the Wake County
Superintendent's Teacher Advisory Council are tackling. One of the recommendations
that came out of last year's Task Force on Teacher Excellence and Superintendent
Bill McNeal's series of teacher forums was creation of the council to seek
teacher help in building a work force of excellent teachers. Meg Peet, a
Jeffreys Grove Elementary teacher, chairs the council's subcommittee looking
at the time and paperwork crunch.

who had already set her sights on becoming a teacher spent National Job

a few years teaching.

January 29, 2002 - Hodge Road Elementary is making
the extra effort to make sure none of its students are left behind. One
of eight Wake County Schools participating in Project Achieve, Hodge Road
is using the program modeled after a Texas school district's successful
effort to boost student achievement.

January 28, 2002 - The third grade team at Brooks
Elementary has jumped into their new museums magnet theme by creating a
cultural study entitled "Cultural Communities of Our World." Teachers Jennifer
Klyne, Yvonne Helms, and Dan Kerwin abandoned their traditional "let me
give you the information you need" format of instruction and created an
exciting discovery-based approach to learning by helping students research
and study other cultures to produce reports, materials and food.

Mine Elementary's Curriculum Mapping Builds Connections for Instruction
January 17, 2002 - Over the last three and a half
years, Principal Greg Decker and the teachers at Lead Mine Elementary have
built an education framework that has resulted in academic growth for students.
The educators have built a process where teachers, students, and parents
can see student expectations and the relationship of instruction one year
to the next. Decker worked with teachers on curriculum mapping when he first
arrived at the school.

PE Teacher Receives Statewide Honor
January 7, 2002 - As a fourth-grade student, Betsy
Beals dreamed of being a physical education teacher when she grew up. For
more than 30 years now, Beals, physical education specialist at Northwoods
Elementary, has been living her dream. In November, the N.C. Alliance for
Athletics, Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance honored Beals
for her lifetime of service in the field of physical education by presenting
her with the Honor Award during the association's annual meeting held in
Greensboro.

December 21, 2001 - With 300 computers located throughout
the school, technology plays an essential role in the curriculum at Timber
Drive Elementary. However, it's not the ample supply of computers, but the
work of Technology Resource Teacher Steve Moore that's credited with the
successful integration of technology into all areas of the school's curriculum.

Students at Pleasant Union Give the Gift of Kindness
December 20, 2001 - Second-grade students at Pleasant
Union Elementary are learning how a simple act of kindness can make a lifelong
difference in the lives of others. Throughout the month of December, the
students in Janice Barr's and Jeanie Leitner's second-grade classes have
been donating their allowances, snack money and money gathered from friends
and family to a fund that will be used to purchase livestock through the
Heifer International Program for a family in need.

Wolf Leads Briarcliff Elementary Students Outside Art Classroom
December 13, 2001 - Students at Briarcliff Elementary
have joined in the Raleigh Arts Commission's Red Wolf Ramble by painting
a wolf and displaying it in the Cary Library. Principal Jane Ann Hughes
said teachers and students came up with the theme "ARThur Wolf." Teachers
integrated literature into the painting of the wolf by using the stories
of "Little Red Riding Hood" and "Peter and the Wolf" in their design.

Explore Holiday Customs From Around the World
December 13, 2001 - First-grade students at Weatherstone
Elementary are learning that the holidays are about more than just Christmas
trees and Santa Claus. Throughout the month of December, the students are
spending time each afternoon learning about different cultures and the traditions
celebrated around the world at this time of the year.

Wake Board of Education Members Leave Board After Years of Service
December 3, 2001 - After a long period of service,
Wake County Board of Education Members Judy Hoffman and J.C. O'Neal are
leaving the board. Hoffman served as northeast Wake County representative
on the board for 12 years, while O'Neal represented southeast Wake County
for eight years. Hoffman and O'Neal both served in leadership roles during
their tenure on the board - Hoffman as chairman and vice-chairman and O'Neal
as vice-chairman.
