WCPSS International Baccalaureate Schools Assess 10th Graders' Personal Projects

March 3, 205 - Seventy teams of teachers and administrators from three Wake County Public School System International Baccalaureate magnet schools will work together Wednesday, March 16 to review the projects of more than 500 Broughton High 10th graders.

These are the first personal projects to be completed by 10th graders in Broughton High's International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme. For students, the personal project is a major event in the final year of the five-year Middle Years Programme.

For the first time, educators from Daniels Middle, East Millbrook Middle and Broughton High will work together using the International Baccalaureate Organization's guidelines and criteria to assess Broughton tenth graders projects, which were required for the first time this year.

Teachers and administrators from both middle schools are excited about the opportunity to see former students' projects. And students are excited at the opportunity to earn a certificate for successful completion of their IB Personal Projects.

Students have consulted with mentors from the community to complete and prepare the presentation of their projects. Students chose a topic of personal interest from the arts to the sciences, researched the topic, reflected on what they have learned and will present their project, process journal and summary of their work in the form of an I-search paper to an assessment panel.

The IB Middle Years Programme, a five-year program for students in grades six through 10, is designed to encourage students to develop an international perspective, connecting classroom learning to the world. Broughton, Daniels and East Millbrook earned authorization to offer the Middle Years Programme at their schools in February 2003.
