School Construction Report

Nov. 29, 2004
Goal 2008: WCPSS is committed to academic excellence. By 2008, 95 percent of students in grades 3 through 12 will be at or above grade level as measured by the State of North Carolina End-of-Grade or Course tests, and all student groups will demonstrate high growth.
BOARD APPROVES RESOLUTION ON FUNDING SCHOOL BUILDING NEEDS
At its Nov. 22 meeting, the Board of Education approved a resolution requesting
funds to resolve the unanticipated crowding for opening school for 2005-06.
The resolution indicates the board needs $8,546,749 now from the county
commissioners for mobile classrooms as part of its solution to 2005-06 space
needs. The resolution also indicates the board will seek an additional $5,897,000
in April to fully fund needed classroom space.
The resolution follows a Nov. 17 meeting with Wake County Commissioners where the two panels jointly discussed classroom space needs for the 2005-06 school year, as well as the PLAN 2004 school construction program.
The resolution seeks part of the $31.1 million the school system needs to respond next year to dramatic growth in school enrollment and state requirements to reduce class size at third grade. WCPSS's $31.1 million plan will buy 146 mobile classrooms and modular classroom buildings, add modular classroom buildings at Wakefield High School, build two modular elementary schools and lease space from Magellan Charter School.
BOARD AWARDS CONTRACT FOR MODULAR CLASSROOM BUILDINGS
At its Nov. 22 meeting, the Board of Education awarded a single-prime contract
to Resun Leasing, Inc., in the amount of $7,190,920 for the purchase of
2 modular elementary schools plus 7 individual modular units. Funding is
available for the purchase of the modular units from the total project budget
of $8,800,000, as provided in the PLAN 2004 School Building Program Mobile
Classrooms-Growth Project.
BOARD APPROVES SCHEMATIC DESIGN FOR SPECIAL OPTIONAL MIDDLE SCHOOL
At its Nov. 22 meeting, the Board of Education approved the schematic design
documents prepared by Gurel Architecture for the construction of the Special
Optional Middle School in the building recently acquired on US Highway 64.
The project is funded as part of the PLAN 2000 School Building Program.
BOARD AND COUNTY COMMISSIONERS DISCUSS NEED FOR CLASSROOM SPACE
At a Nov. 17 joint meeting of the Wake County Commissioners and Board of
Education, school leaders received assurances from county officials that
they will help to meet the need for classroom space. The commissioners and
board discussed the school system's $31.1 million plan to meet the needs
for the opening of the 2005-06 school year and the PLAN 2004 school construction
program. During the meeting county commissioners approved funding to buy
land for new schools in Rolesville and Wendell. The commissioners and board
plan further discussions on classroom space needs Dec. 15 and Jan. 10.
