Goal 2008: WCPSS is committed to academic excellence. By 2008, 95 percent of students in grades 3 through 12 will be at or above grade level as measured by the State of North Carolina End-of-Grade or Course tests, and all student groups will demonstrate high growth.

BOARD APPROVES LAND PURCHASE IN GARNER
At its April 5 meeting, the Board of Education approved the purchase of
a 27-acre site in Garner at Jones Sausage and WKBQ Station roads. An elementary
school that would open in 2007 is planned for the site. The estimated cost
of the property is $696,280.
BOARD APPORVES RESOLUTION REALLOCATING FUNDS
At its April 5 meeting, the Board of Education approved a resolution reallocating
funds for school construction. The board agreed to fund in the next school
construction program two new elementary schools, E17 and E 19 that had been
in PLAN 2004. With the earlier school construction bond referendum agreed
to by the Board of Education and Wake County Commissioners, the projects
will remain on schedule. These funds will be used to complete PLAN 2004
projects already underway that have been impacted by increased construction
costs.
BOARD AWARDS CONTRACT FOR BRIER CREEK ELEMENTARY
At its April 5 meeting, the Board of Education awarded a single-prime contract
to Barnhill Contracting Co. in the amount of $16,375,000 for the Brier Creek
Elementary School and Community Center. The contract amount includes $13,161,493
in the WCPSS portion and $3,214,007 in the City of Raleigh portion. The
project will be funded through the PLAN 2000 School Building Program and
the PLAN 2004 School Building Program. A reallocation of $3,076,193 is needed
to fully fund the school portion of the project and an additional $600,000
is needed to fully fund the City of Raleigh portion.
BOARD AWARDS CONTRACT FOR BARWELL ROAD ELEMENTARY
At its April 5 meeting, the Board of Education awarded a single-prime contract
to Barnhill Contracting Company in the tentative amount of $21,829,400 for
the Barwell Road Elementary School and Community Center. The contract amount
includes $14,893,693 in the WCPSS portion and $6,935,707 in the City of
Raleigh portion. The project will be funded through the PLAN 2000 School
Building Program and the PLAN 2004 School Building Program. A reallocation
of $3,359,787 is needed to fully fund the school portion of the project
and an additional $1,730,173 is needed to fund the City of Raleigh portion.
BOARD AWARDS CONTRACT FOR NEW MODULAR SCHOOL
At its April 5 meeting, the Board of Education awarded a single-prime contract
to Scotia Construction, Inc., in the amount of $1,379,000 for the site setup
of the Modular Elementary School to be located on Spring Forest Road. The
project will be funded through the PLAN 2000 Mobile Classroom project and
the PLAN 2004 Mobile Classrooms - Growth project.
BOARD AWARDS CONTRACT FOR AVERSBORO ROOF REPLACEMENT
At its April 5 meeting, the Board of Education award of the single-prime
contract to Quality Roofers & Guttering, Inc. in the amount of $234,347
for the partial roof replacement at Aversboro Elementary School. The project
will be funded from the PLAN 2004 School Building Program
BOARD APPROVES INTERLOCAL AGREEMENT FOR HARRIS CREEK
At its April 5 meeting, the Board of Education approved an Interlocal Agreement
between Wake County and the Board of Education that sets forth responsibilities
of both parties at the new Harris Creek Elementary. Construction of the
new school includes recreational improvements not included in the standard
elementary school program. Funding for these improvements is being provided
by Wake County and includes an irrigated multi-purpose field, 44 additional
parking spaces, picnic shelter, walking track, future tot-lot and playground.
BOARD APPROVES CONSTRUCTION AGREEMENT FOR BARWELL ROAD
At its April 5 meeting, the Board of Education approved a construction agreement
between the Board and City of Raleigh outlining responsibilities of both
parties in the construction of the new Barwell Road Elementary and City
of Raleigh Community Center and Park.
BOARD APPROVES CONSTRUCTION AGREEMENT FOR BRIER CREEK
At its April 5 meeting, the Board of Education approved a construction agreement
between the Board and City of Raleigh outlining responsibilities of both
parties in the construction of the new Brier Creek Elementary and City of
Raleigh Community Center and Park.
BOARD APPROVES INFRASTRUCTURE AGREEMENT FOR BRIER CREEK
At its April 5 meeting, the Board of Education approved a formal three-party
agreement for infrastructure improvements at Brier Creek. On August 13,
2003, the Board of Education and the City of Raleigh jointly acquired 20.03
acres on Brier Creek Parkway for a new elementary facility, community center
and community park. The property acquired from Brier Creek Associates is
a portion of larger tract to be developed by Brier Creek Associates. Infrastructure
improvements related to roads and public water are to be completed with
shared costs among Brier Creek Associates, the City of Raleigh and the Wake
County Board of Education. The estimated cost of the Board of Education's
share at 25% is $225,000, which is included in the project budget for Brier
Creek Elementary School.
