BOARD DISCUSSES IMPACT OF YEAR-ROUND CONVERSION
In the Jan. 3 committee of the whole meeting, the Board of Education discussed the impact of converting schools to a year-round calendar and the broad policy issues that may arise. "This is a very complex issue," said Dr. Ramey Beavers, WCPSS senior director for Growth Management. Beavers said estimates indicate a seat deficiency for 5,000 students in 2006-07 and an additional 9,600 in 2007-08. "What are we going to do to be ready for the students we know will be here?" Beavers asked. After Beavers introduction, board members brainstormed policy issues affecting human resources, school capacity, the school building program, magnet schools, the community, businesses and legislative issues. Just in the school capacity area, board members mentioned a number of issues including balancing tracks, assignment of late arrivals, tracks for siblings, and feeder patterns. Board members plan to review the ideas collected from the brainstorming session and refine the ideas for further discussion with school administrators.

BOARD APPROVES DESIGN CONSULTANT AGREEMENT FOR EAST MILLBROOK MS
At its Jan. 3 meeting, the Board of Education approved a design consultant agreement with The Roberts Group, PA, for the design of additions and renovations to the East Millbrook Middle that will be included in the next building program. The total proposed budget will be determined with the development of the next building program. The design consultant is only authorized to provide services through permitting, including design narrative, schematic design, design development, construction documents, and construction administration on Phase I site work. Thus, this agreement is for $905,333. The remaining amount will be authorized after passage of the next building program.
