Description
Brassfield is a wonderful elementary school in so many ways that describing its strengths is a real challenge.
We have a School of Excellence designation, but our school is so much more than our high test scores. We have low staff turnover and a highly dedicated PTA, so we are able to provide a consistent, high-quality learning environment for each child. Each person in our building from the office and support staff to our excellent child nutrition staff is an important team member in providing a nurturing environment for children.
To capture a glimpse of Brassfield at its best, our daily news show that is written and produced by students, Bearly TV, is probably the best example of the many ways in which Brassfield excels. Bearly TV highlights the many accomplishments of students and staff, including our amazing media center and environmental science gardens manned by the Green Team. One visit to our campus will be all it takes to understand why our school is the place to be and the place to belong!
Brassfield Elementary operates on the year-round calendar. Students at the year-round schools are divided into four groups, called tracks, with each track having its own calendar. In a year-round elementary school, the traditional 180-day school year is divided into nine-week quarters with a three week break at the end of each quarter. Students are in school the same number of days as their counterparts in traditional schools; the days are simply redistributed thoughout the year. The reorganized schedule is called a 45/15 - 45 days in school, 15 days off.
Schedules are staggered so that, at any given time, three tracks are in school and one is on break. These staggered schedules make it possible for the school to serve up to thirty-three percent more students than its intended capacity.
All year-round schools offer a traditional curriculum. A traditional curriculum offers students high quality instruction, opportunities for advanced studies, creative exploration and extra-curricular activities in a nurturing educational setting.
Year-round schools provide a more continuous learning process. Since students do not have long summer vacations, major reviewing in the fall is eliminated. Students and teachers are more energized throughout the year due to regular breaks. The three-week breaks provide frequent enrichment and remedial opportunities for students during the year.
