Description
A B Combs Leadership Magnet Elementary School is based on two core foundations - "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" based on Stephen R. Covey's best selling book and Baldridge practices based on Edward Demmings' work in the business world. The principles behind Covey create an environment that allows every individual to feel valued for their unique gifts and talents. By developing the WHOLE child - socially, emotionally, academincally, and ethically - the program fosters a climate of principle - centered and personal leadership.
Decisions based on data and research - from world-reknowned educators and within our building - keep us highly successful by all academic standards. Our teachers and administration have worked for over 5 years to create this model that balances keeping traditions alive with continuously re-evaluating ways to be more efficient and effective in teaching. This model is in alignment with practices and principles from the following: 7 Correlates of Successful Schools (Larry Lozottee), 55 Essentials (Ron Clark), Professional Learning Communities (Rick DuFour), Rigor and Relevance (William Daggett), Brain Research (Mel Levine), and Emotional Intelligence (Robert Cooper).
We live our mission statement everyday, "Developing Leaders One Child at a Time". Our school has procedures and events in place to ensure we reach our desired outcome - Data Notebooks, Social Etiquette Classes, Leadership Day Oral Presentations, Community Service Projects, Leader of the Week Program and Daily News Broadcasts. Please visit us to learn more about the unique components of our model.
In April 2006, AB Combs Leadership Magnet Elementary School was awarded the Ronald P. Simpson Award by the Magnet Schools of America organization recognizing it as the top magnet school in the United States. The school's story is also featured in Dr. Covey's book on the 8th habit and the school has partnered with the Covey Organization to write a book on leadership development as it relates to elementary aged children.
