Curriculum: Traditional

Traditional curriculum schools offer students high quality instruction, opportunities for advanced studies, creative exploration and extra-curricular activities in a nurturing educational setting. Some of the highest-performing schools in Wake County are traditional curriculum schools.

Description

Located just north of historic Salem Street, in the quaint town of Apex, Salem Elementary was built in 2000. It is a state of the art facility that is landscaped, has age appropriate playgrounds, baseball fields, soccer fields, a butterfly garden, an outdoor classroom, and a pond. The school features a well-equipped Media Center, spacious Multi Purpose room, full service Cafeteria, Art and Music rooms, Town Meeting area, and a colorful inviting interior.

Salem Elementary uses the Core Knowledge curriculum. The Core Knowledge program is based on the philosophy and writings of Dr. E.D. Hirsch, a professor at the University of Virginia. Based on his philosophy that "knowledge builds on prior knowledge," and that "all children must have access to a body of critical content which provides a firm foundation for later learning." Dr. Hirsch is the well known author of Cultural Literacy and the series What Your Kindergartner and (First - Sixth) Grader Needs To Know.

The Core Knowledge curriculum is:
Solid- provides a guide to important, lasting, knowledge
Sequenced- knowledge builds on knowledge
Shared- provides a common ground for communication
Specific- helps eliminate curricular repetitions or gaps
