General Guidelines for Determining School Assignment
The IEP team determines the appropriate level of service for a student. Once that decision is made, Special Education Services makes a school assignment based on specific guidelines:
- Students are assigned to their base school if appropriate special education services, based on the IEP, are available at that school.
- If a student cannot be served in the base school, the student is assigned to the closest program to his/her home that has the appropriate program with space and that matches the base school calendar. Rising 5th graders will be returned to their current school unless a change in service requires a different assignment.
- After school assignments have been received, parents may request a transfer to a different school. The transfer is approved or denied based on Growth and Planning guidelines and availability of appropriate special education services. Parents are responsible for transportation of students who are granted a transfer. This includes students who receive special transportation.
- Special Education Services does not make track assignments. Principals and Growth and Planning will make every effort to have siblings on the same track.
Special Education Services cannot address parent concerns about school assignment until after services are determined by the IEP team and assignment is made based on assignment guidelines. We will address individual issues beginning May 15.
